Insomnia Causes and Solutions

Insomnia refers to difficulties in falling asleep or staying asleep. While more than a third of the American population suffers from occasional insomnia, it is more than one in ten people who suffer chronic insomnia.

Insomnia may not seem very serious, but sleep is as important to our lives as is food and water and it is absolutely essential in keeping us alive and is something that should be treated. It doesn’t only affect you during the night. Lying in bed unable to fall asleep is troubling, but it can become more so when it starts to affect your daytime as well. Insufficient sleep can disrupt your work and home life because it leaves you sleepy, restless, stressed and unable to concentrate or focus on daily tasks. It can make things like driving or operating machinery extremely dangerous, putting you and those around you at risk for accidents.

Several factors can play a part in insomnia, such as: stress, excitement, illness or breathing difficulties. You may find it difficult to fall asleep when you are worried or maybe the night before a big event which is quite common and short lived, but if you are finding it difficult to sleep for more than a couple of hours or days, then it may be time to do a little bit of investigating to try and find the cause for your insomnia. A trip to the doctor may even be in order to rule out any medical issues.

There are a few things that you can try to help you get some sleep. Things such as following a regular sleep schedule where you make an effort to go to bed and awake at the same time everyday can be helpful. As well, using your bedroom as only a place for rest and making a point to not fall asleep outside the bedroom and avoiding napping can prove beneficial in helping you get a proper nights sleep. There’s always of course the old tired and true method of having a warm glass of milk or a light snack before bed. Also, regular exercise is proven effective.

If you have tried all of the other methods and are still finding insomnia to be a problem, you could enlist the help of a sleep aid. There are several prescription options available, but these should be used with care as they can be quite potent and addictive. A natural sleep aid, such as LunaRest may be a better choice as it offers a safe alternative which is non-habit forming and has no side effects. It acts gently to help you get good nights sleep without affecting your alertness the following day the way many other sleeping pills can. As well, LunaRest is available without a prescription and at a reasonable cost.

If you’re having difficulty sleeping, you owe it to yourself and your loved ones to find a solution. Proper sleep will improve all aspects of your day to day living. It’s worth it to seek help.
